A new architectural highlight is taking shape in Reutlingen: the newly built local history museum in Oberamteistraße is turning heads with its transparent roof and façade, clad entirely in 15 mm thick glass beaver tail tiles. To secure the delicate tiles safely in place, the project relies on a specially developed wing clip from FOS – a bespoke solution produced in a small batch for this prestigious flagship project.
Custom solution for a one-of-a-kind construction
For this challenging project, Friedrich Ossenberg-Schule GmbH + Co KG (FOS) designed the double clip 511, manufactured from premium-grade V2A stainless steel. With a total production run of 1,000 units, the clip is mainly used along the hip sections of the roof, where it provides reliable stabilisation for the overlapping crown tiling. The goal: precise positional fixing of the tiles.
The glass tiles, manufactured by French producer La Rochère, were treated with a special coating by Fuchs Design. Processing involved diamond-tipped band saws and custom-developed drill bits. Spacer elements ensure long-term ventilation behind the tiles – an exceptionally sophisticated solution requiring the highest level of planning and execution. According to project manager Mr Hansen, the build has already attracted significant attention from manufacturers and planners alike.
Heritage meets innovation
The new building, with its distinctive glass envelope designed by Stuttgart-based architects wulf architekten, is part of a comprehensive restoration project in Reutlingen’s Oberamteistraße – one of the city’s oldest historic streetscapes. The architectural ensemble stands as a prime example of harmonising tradition with contemporary design. Funded by Germany’s national urban development programme Nationale Projekte des Städtebaus, this emerging landmark is set to become a beacon for the region and beyond.
